1988年組建，當時命名為Scum，樂隊原來的風格是Grindcore（碾核）。當Johan Hegg加入后，風格轉向了Death Metal（死亡金屬）。
1992年，樂隊更名為Amon Amarth。Amon Amarth取自英國作家託爾金的小說《指環王》，Amon Amarth在小說中是指一個特定的地點，即位于中土世界的末日山。
1993年樂隊發行了第一張Demo《Thor Arise》。
1994年樂隊發行了第二張Demo《The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter》，限量1000張，在不到12個小時內銷售一空。
2張Demo后，樂隊終於簽約新加坡著名極端金屬公司Pulverised Records，並于1996年發行了首張MCD《Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds》，賣出6000張。
之後樂隊簽約老牌死亡金屬公司Metal Blade Records，並于1998年發行了首張大碟《Once Sent from the Golden Hall》，大受歡迎。從此名揚世界！
